Peat-Free Gardening

A simple guide to repotting indoor plants with a lighter, cleaner growing mix.

Coco coir is an excellent base for healthier houseplants. It holds moisture well, allows air around the roots and creates a light, easy-to-handle growing medium.

Unlike heavy soil-based composts, coir helps reduce compaction over time β€” particularly useful for indoor plants grown in pots and containers.

Peat-Free Gardening

Why houseplants benefit from coco coir

Helps retain moisture without making pots feel overly heavy

Supports better root aeration

Creates a lighter, more open potting mix

Easy to store in compact block form

A practical peat-free alternative

A simple houseplant potting mix

For most common houseplants, use:

Hydrated coco coir
2 parts hydrated
coco coir
+
Perlite
1 part perlite
+
Houseplant compost
1 part quality houseplant
compost or bark-based mix

This creates a balanced mix with moisture retention, airflow and structure.

🌿 For plants that prefer drier roots, such as succulents, cacti or snake plants, increase the proportion of perlite or grit.

Watering and feeding

Coco coir holds moisture well, so always check the compost before watering again. Push a finger a few centimetres into the mix β€” if it still feels damp, wait another day or two.

Coir itself contains very little plant nutrition. Feed houseplants with a suitable liquid fertiliser during active growth, usually spring and summer.
